Quiet Zone

by Jonathan Ravasz

My work and freetime is constantly interrupted by notifications. In order to avoid the fragmentation of my focus I use different software tools to shut down these interruptions. But this digital self-management can be also distracting, this motivated me to design a physical object that can shut out the digital smog by creating a notification free “quiet zone”.

My first idea was to create a portable personal signal jammer, by modifying a Wi-Fi router. The jammer would block out GSM and Wi-Fi signals from the users personal zone. Unfortunately because of possible legal issues the prototype could not be realised.

An offline solution for signal jamming is a Faraday cage. I’ve decided to design cases for my smart devices. Only by using duct tape and tin foil I was able to create a fully functional tablet case, that blocks the incoming signals, including GPS.
